SESSION 766 of the 24th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists in Barcelona 2018: "THE SYNERGIC APPROACH TO PRESERVING AND RESTORING CHALK MONUMENTS, ARTIFACTS, ROMAN MOSAICS AND FRESCO SURFACES WITH ARCHEO-MATERIALS".
Applied research is imperatively necessary to save some of the most important artworks and archaeological remains belonging to the national cultural heritage and requires high-level professional interventions, aligned with internationally accepted standards.
Cultural heritage objects of great value, which are the main subject of our study, are painted fresco, mosaics, metopes carved in stone in the form of bass, incisions in the cave walls, limestone components, archaeological pieces. The study seeks out innovative restoration solutions compatible with the materials artworks and artifacts were originally made of, which act as binders and are prepared based on traditional recipes: organic material (whole egg, egg yolk, casein, glue, cinnamon, plant gum etc.) mixed with pigments such as lead white, red ocher, yellow ocher, malachite, azurite, enamel, black wine and additions (chalk, gypsum).
Non-destructive or minimally-destructive analytical procedures are implemented under optimal conditions for identifying individual types of protein materials present in the composition of the examined artworks. Being well-known that applying traditional organic binders as well as using the chosen advanced investigation techniques have a determinant result, most of the times with an irreversible character, over the integrity and the durability of the artworks, the above mentioned solutions should be subject of a thorough case study before actually applying them on real samples.
