Removal of members of an ethnic minority in order to establish an ethnically homogenous geographic area has been evident in the history of human civilizations. Expulsion of Muslims from Southeast Europe, displacement of Roma people, Armenian Genocide in WWI and mass killings of Jews in WWII are significant examples of different ethnic cleansing during the last centuries. In contemporary world, however, the United Nations has called the Rohingya the world’s most persecuted minority group and described the atrocities by Myanmar’s authorities as “ethnic cleansing and crime against humanity,” whereby one group removes another ethnic or religious community through violence. This ongoing military crackdown by the Myanmar Army and police on Rohingya in Rakhine State in the country's western region is followed by a national declaration calling Rohingya as non-citizen of Burma. The army have been accused of wide-scale human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, gang rapes, arson and infanticides, claims which the government dismisses as "exaggerations".
So far 647,000 distressed Rohingyas have entered into Bangladesh since August 2017 according to UNHCR. This influx created a huge pressure on the economy of Bangladesh while the Rohingyas are living with huge uncertainty. On the one hand, the Rohingya crisis symbolizes the misery, banishment and uncertainty of an impoverished minority group while Bangladesh, a recipient influx of destitute immigrants, became the prey of politics, power and injustice. Within this bleak scenario the Department of Criminology, University of Dhaka has arranged its second international conference on Rohingya crisis.
