About ISHEN 2019

The 18th ISHEN Meeting is an up-to-date, evidence-based, clinically oriented educational program with distinguished international faculty who will review the latest clinical and translational research in hepatic encephalopathy. Outstanding basic, clinical, and translational research work by junior investigators will also be presented.

Call for Papers

The International Society for Hepatic Encephalopathy and Nitrogen Metabolism (ISHEN) invite researchers and clinicians at all levels to submit abstracts on current and emerging basic, clinical, and translational hepatic encephalopathy research for oral and poster presentation at the 18th ISHEN Meeting, taking place September 12-15, 2019 in Williamsburg, Virginia USA.

Accepted abstracts will be published in an online supplement in the American Journal of Gastroenterology.

Who Should Submit an Abstract

We invite researchers and clinicians at all levels to submit abstracts on current and emerging basic, clinical, and translational hepatic encephalopathy research.

Please indicate what type of presentation you would like to be considered in the submission form; oral, poster, or both.

What to Submit

Please submit a structured abstract with background (with objectives), methods, results, conclusion, and references.  There is a 400 word limit.  Scientific abstracts report the results of original research and must contain data (either quantitative or qualitative) and report research results.  One table or figure is allowed for each abstract.

Review & Judging Process

Abstracts will be reviewed by the Selection Committee and evaluated based on:

  • Quality and importance of scientific question
  • Scientific content: design and methodology

Junior Investigator

Junior Investigators are anyone under 35 years of age at the time of abstract submission, currently in a training program (undergraduate, graduate, residency, clinical fellowship, postdoctoral fellowship) who does not have an independent research program.  Individuals in faculty positions are ineligible to apply.

The top twenty Junior Investigator oral presentation and poster abstract submissions will be awarded complimentary registration and a stipend of $1,000 USD.

Remaining Junior Investigator submissions will received a reduced registration fee.
