About SWTAS 2017

The 2017 Southwestern Texas Asian Symposium is to bring scholars, researchers, practitioners, and students together to discuss issues related to teaching and researching in the Asian contexts. Specifically, it aims to provide a forum that allows participants across disciplines to explore critical issues about Asia and fosters a community of professionals specialized in Asia-related research and Asian scholars. Promoting and serving for diversity and globalization in higher education, the Southwestern Texas Asian Symposium will be an avenue for academic and professional discourse amongst faculty, students, and practitioners in various fields and specialties.

Call for Papers

We are pleased to announce that the 1st Southwestern Texas Asian Symposium in Social Studies, Science and Engineering will be held at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on November the 8###sup/sup### 2017. This symposium will be co-organized by the Asian Studies Minor program at UTRGV (www.utrgv.edu/asian-studies) and Texas Coastal Bend of Korean Scientists and Engineering Association.  

Symposium Theme: Asia in a globalized world

Call for Abstracts Guidelines:

Participants are invited to submit an abstract of their projects by the deadline to be reviewed for possible inclusion in the program. The abstract should be within 300 words that summarizes the project. Projects can be theoretical discussions, empirical research studies, teaching methodologies, artistic works, or other scholarly works. The SWTAS provides three concurrent sessions, and speakers are expected to give a 15-minute presentation followed by a 5-minute Q&A.

  Abstract submission must include:  

  1. Title page (including all authors’ name, affiliation, contact information and short bio)

  2. Abstract: 300 words

 Please submit the abstract via email to asianstudies@utrgv.edu with a heading of [Asian Symposium abstract] by Monday September 11, 2017.  All proposals will be blind-reviewed. Notice of acceptance will be sent out in the fourth week of September.
