Call for Papers

Witness to the Age of Genocide. Raphael Lemkin and the Convention of 1948

3-5 December 2018, Warsaw

 The Witold Pilecki Center for Totalitarian Studies is honoured to announce an international, interdisciplinary conference in the memory of Raphael Lemkin, Polish-Jewish jurist, author of the term genocide and initiator of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide adopted by the United Nations on 9 December 1948. December 2018 marks the 70 anniversary of the adoption of the Convention.

The aim of this conference is a broad interdisciplinary reflection on the historical meaning and continued relevance of Lemkin’s concept. We will discuss the provisions of the Convention, its application, legacy and political impact.

The following speakers confirmed their participation: Dr. Donna-Lee Frieze, Prof. William A. Schabas, Prof. Marek Kornat.

We welcome proposals for papers in the following topic areas:

1)            Lemkin’s contribution to the genocide studies

2)            Lemkin and the 1948 Convention

3)            Before Lemkin – Polish legal thought in the early 20th century

4)            The 1948 Convention 70 years later – appraisal

5)            History of genocide

6)            Defining ‘genocide’ – interdisciplinary approaches

7)            Documentary genocide – challenges, opportunities, potentials

8)            Teaching genocide – popular awareness and early prevention

9)            Lemkin, the 1948 Convention and the current issues – looking towards the  future

10)         Nazism and communism – genocide as a tool for totalitarian regimes

11)         International law, criminal tribunals and the International Criminal Court

12)         Genocide(s) in the Polish lands during the World War II

FURTHER INFORMATION:

  • Conference will be held in English and Polish (Organizer provides simultaneous translation).
  • Time frame for presentation – around 20 minutes.
  • We welcome submissions from professional scholars as well as other graduate participants.
  • All proposals should be submitted by email by our Paper Proposal Form (see below).
  • All Proposals must be submitted by 30 March 2018.
  • We require abstract written in English (max. 200 words).
  • We cover travel expenses for selected participants.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:

If you consider to take part in our session with a paper, please fill the Paper Proposal Form, save the PDF file and send by mail to pileckicenter@obnt.pl. Application should include: personal info, title and abstract of the paper in English and brief bio. Should you wish to receive a travel grant please include a short justification in the paper proposal form. Notification of decisions will be sent by 30 April 2018.
